30 Jul Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) from July 1 this year
From 1 July 2018, Singapore’s Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) takes into consideration a vehicle’s emissions of four extra pollutants on top of carbon dioxide CO2, namely hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and fine particulate matter (PM), in addition to the vehicle’s carbon dioxide emission, to encourage consumers to shift to less pollutive car models.
The worst performing pollutant determines your vehicle’s band within the VES and its corresponding VES rebate or surcharge. If your car uses a port-fuel injection engine, and does not have a fine particulate matter (PM) value, it will be automatically assigned the maximum VES surcharge band (i.e. C2 of $20,000). This is regardless of the car’s emissions of the other 4 pollutants.
A number of parallel import car models in Singapore will be affected due to the severity of the surcharge when fine particulate matter (PM) will be included in Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) from July 1 this year. Car dealers anticipate COE premiums to plummet in the coming months, as a result of the fall in demand for these parallel import models that will result in lesser competitive bidding for COE.
This will narrow down the number of new car choices for buyers. But another way of looking at it will be our improved air quality. But regardless of make or model, we have the requisite expertise to keep your car’s vehicle emissions in proper check, across all categories. As one of Singapore’s largest independent automotive servicing centres in Singapore, we take our nation’s air quality very seriously. It is our social responsibility as a corporate citizen to comply with our government’s emissions regulation, while maintaining the highest servicing benchmark to satisfy our customers.
However, the big picture in terms of our domestic new car market is one of continuous restriction in releasing the COE quota in the coming years. Those who currently own a car will be keeping it for a much longer period of time. When a car ages, its emissions will have to be properly monitored. This requires an all-round automotive servicing expertise to maintain every aspect of the car in tiptop shape. This is precisely why you should take your car into MBM for servicing and pampering for long years of satisfactory ownership and motoring.
